The summer will be gone before we know it, but we are still galloping full speed ahead which is why Tomten Farm and Sanctuary will be offering a special mentoring program to animal loving kids ages 11-16. This unique program is designed for kids with the desire to learn more about the day-to-day operations of an animal sanctuary and get hands on experience with our rescues. Taught by our long term volunteer and intern, UNH Equine Science major, Aileen W., it’s sure to be chock of personal attention, education, hard work, and more animals than you can count. Join us at the farm 2-3 weekdays from July 10th to the 31st, 10:30-2:30 and help us go above and beyond to maintain happy, healthy animals 365 days a year. ROBOTICS Explore and build with Lego WeDo 2.0 robots. Students will build robots using the new Lego WeDo 2.0 system. Students will learn to assemble and program the robots to learn the basic concepts of programming. Once students have shown mastery of the system basics they will be allowed follow their own path as they investigate increasingly complex modules. Modules may include: Sorting to Recycle: Design a device that uses the physical properties of objects, including their shape and size, to sort them. Robust Structures: Investigate the characteristics that make a building earthquake resistant, using an earthquake simulator constructed from LEGO® bricks. MAKER STATION Learn how to build a catapult from common household materials and use the Engineering Design Process to improve your design. Prototype a foam rocket toy and experiment with the design to fly longer and farther. Build balloon powered rocket cars to race against your classmates. Students will be building with common household materials and applying the Engineering Design Process to their work. Bio: I have been at Young Scholars of Central Pennsylvania since its inception in August of 2005. Teaching is my passion. It is exciting to see students learn and grow academically and gain social skills. I have enjoyed teaching 5th and 4th grade as a lead classroom teacher over the years. I have also taught Physical Education, Turkish and Character Education for both elementary and middle school students. Intro: In Turkish Conversation Club, we will use a variety of games and activities to promote Turkish language skills.
