This camp is supported by the ASM Materials Education Foundation with students learning from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology professors.
If you already know what a metallurgical engineer does and what doing a ‘forensic investigation’ entails, then you know how cool this camp will be. In case you do not know about this field of engineering, here are just some of the things you will do this week:
*Learn about nanomaterials, composites, polymers, metals, and the making of a Samurai Sword
*Get hands-on with heat treating, blacksmithing, welding, and casting
*Do materials testing (, impact and tensile strength testing) and materials characterization using an optical and scanning electron microscope
*Practice forensic engineering by investigating how materials fail

My son is going to be a senior this upcoming year and this past summer, he wanted to go to ASM Materials, Metallurgy, and Forensics Engineering Institute in Rapid City, SD. We reluctantly sent him, but were amazed at all the wonderful things he learned and did while he was there. He had hands-on learning in an educational environment about materials, metals, building and engineering. It was as if he has gone away for a semester of college. I would recommend this camp to anyone whose child is interested in getting into any engineering field or anything in the science realm.
