Children can start camp as soon as they hit kindergarten age. Some may even be able to begin before this. Many youth attend their first session and get the “camp bug.” From here on out, they return summer after summer, well into their teen years. Most programs offer staff-in-training or junior counselor programs to help older teens transition into staff roles.

Parents should consider their child’s maturity, desire to attend camp and independence when making this decision. Some children are ready by the age of six whereas others are not ready until the age of ten. Discussing this decision with youth is important Kids want to be heard. If they understand what a camp offers, then they can make the decision about whether or not to attend.

Some programs last a week whereas others last a month or more. Selecting the program length means thinking about the child’s interest, age and a family’s budget. Some parents sign youth up for more than one session. The age and experience of the camper dictate the session length. Some families like to sign their child up for a session to see if they enjoy it. From here, a parent may be able to sign up for an additional session. It is important to talk to the Camp Director to discuss space, waiting lists, and if multiple sessions are appropriate for youth.
