“Teen Sexism, Self-image and School Success” with Campbell Leaper, PhD
Adolescents today face the competing demands of doing well in school, being popular, developing close relationships with friends and romantic partners, and appearing sexually attractive to others. Each of these challenges is affected by stereotypes about what is considered desirable or undesirable for each gender. Sexism occurs when these stereotypes constrain the self-image and aspirations of girls and boys. What are the most powerful influences in teen sexism – family, peers, school, music, social media. How are these influences and the stereotypes they promote affecting teen relationships and school success? Do you worry about their effects on your children? Campbell Leaper, Professor and Department Chair of Psychology at UC Santa Cruz, and co-founder of the Gender Development Research Conference, is an expert on gender ideologies, self-concept, sexism, and gender bias in schools. He will talk about the ways that gender stereotypes affect girls’ and boys’ self-image, relationships, and school success. Most importantly, he will discuss what adults can do to mitigate sexism and the negative cultural influences in our kids’ lives. Youth Summer Circus Camp! - Austin, TX
We are so excited to be launching our brand new youth program with 2 exciting new offerings, Elemental Circus Camp and Sunday open level youth classes. Sign up for one or both weeks of Elemental Circus Camp this summer. Youth of ages 6-16 will undergo a circus adventure including age and skill appropriate lessons in performance, aerial arts, tumbling, balance and coordination, juggling, dance and magic. Youth will be grouped by age, and do not need to have any previous circus experience. With the exception of students advanced in aerial, gymnastics, or dance training, who will have the opportunity to submit an audition video to be grouped in an advanced mixed age group covering material more appropriate to their level. Polpis PM Van - Week 4 - Polpis Harbor
In an effort to alleviate the traffic going to Polpis in the mornings, NCS is offering a bus to Polpis Harbor from the Nantucket Elementary School. Space is limited, so we suggest registering for this service early. This year the bus is being offered as a round trip service. The afternoon sessions bus will leave the Nantucket Elementary School promptly at 12:35am in order to get the children to their morning programs on time. The bus will return to the Elementary School with the sailors by 3:45pm and Parents/Guardians are responsible for promptly picking up their children. There is a $20 late pick-up fee, which will be billed to your NCS account, if a parent/guardian is later than 15 minutes to pick-up their student. ** Please note: This is a weekly sign-up, not bi-weekly! 5082286600.0
