Well build programs, games, and animations using Scratch: the drag-and-drop, color-coded, event driven programming block editor, and create some epic 3D structures using the latest computer-aided design software (CAD). Young makers will learn the fundamentals of programming with this fun introduction from the MIT Media Lab including if/then statements, loop structures, data variables, mathematical and Boolean operators. These skills will be applied to create games as we explore design concepts such as objective, aesthetic, and difficulty curves. Water World - Vasona Lake County Park
Water, water everywhere, undeniably one of the most crucial elements to life on our planet is water. Yet how many people understand the basics of this life giving resource? Use investigation, observation, and exploration to understand more about this amazing resource. Do hands-on experiments involving dropping, spraying, heating, and freezing and discover the mysterious properties of water and how it changes to different states of matter. Explore the local watershed to see how water moves and changes shape along its path to the sea. Search the creek to look for critters that live in or near water. Meet and take a close look at YSIs live aquatic animals and develop a better appreciation for the world of water. 408-827-5507

For those teens age 14-17 who would like to pursue the visual arts in more depth, we are offering a 2-week workshop that will be lead by local artists who work in a variety of mediums – painting, drawing, sculpting and journaling. In October we will resume our homeschool series by following the changing seasons and further developing our our naturalist skills. Together well seek to develop an understanding of the unique ecology of this landscape while also deepening our connection to nature, ourselves and each other. This class is held entirely outdoors in wilderness conditions (no bathrooms or permanent structure for shelter) in all but extreme weather conditions. Well stay warm by keeping active, ducking out of the wind, soaking up the sun, and treating ourselves to snacks by occasional small campfires. Proper clothing--especially layers of wool--is essential, as is an adventurous, curious spirit! 978-463-2233

Art, science, technology and math! Troy Rogers is a composer, instrument builder, and educator whose work often finds itself at various intersections of art and technology. For more than ten years, he has been creating robotic musical instruments and producing music for these novel devices. He will provide an ensemble of percussion robots for the workshop and guide students through the process. Kits available for purchase but not required for workshop participation.
