Description: In this course we will look at cultural pioneers, those who dared to push the boundaries of art, music, film and literature, and the profound effect they had on the status quo. We will explore a wide variety of artists, from William Blake (poet/artist) and Art Blakey (jazz drummer) to Chuck D (activist, emcee, author) and David Lynch (film maker). We will also harness alternate and augmented reality technology to create an interactive installation on NCSSMs campus. Goals: Participants will understand the role of the rebel and how the rebels outsider perspective creates cultural change. Participants will be also work collaboratively to plan and build both an augmented reality exhibit and an alternate reality game to teach participants about the history of rebellious artists and thinkers. 919-416-2635

Galactic Adventures with LEGO® Bricks - Kentlake High School
The year is 2025. Our rocket ship has landed on a distant planet and our class has been asked to make it a comfortable place to live and explore. Well build homes, rovers, machines and spacecraft - and power them with LEGO® motors. The projects include: •A space home with rotating solar panels above the roof powered by a LEGO® motor •All-terrain rover equipped with a satellite dish to explore the planet and report findings back to base •Research buggy with extras like a drill to analyze rocks and dig for minerals •Spacecraft to travel around the planet This class is great for a LEGO® fanatic as well as someone new to the world of brick construction. Students learn how to incorporate gears into projects, use battery packs and motors to power creations, interlock bricks for strength, make sturdy connections with LEGO Technic® beams and pegs, and more! Students play with and test out their creations through obstacle courses, imaginative play, and various teacher-inspired missions. Students take home a LEGO® mini-build and camp T-shirt. Wave Runners Day Camp- Session 1 (4th-8th Graders) - Environmental Studies Center
Campers will have lots of fun while learning to care for their environment. Outdoor activities and environmental learning are the focus of this camp. New this year! Snack bar open each morning and ice cream day on Tuesdays. All selections $1.00. Activities include: *A boat trip on the Indian River Lagoon *Seining *Setting up and maintaining aquaria *Area beach and park visits *Fishing *Cast netting *Various water activities *Snorkeling *Arts & Crafts *Games & relay races *Special Friday activities All teachers are state certified and camper/teacher ratio is 20/1. In addition, high school counselors assist teachers with supervision. All water activities are closely monitored. One week minimum, $180.00 per week. This class will be fun and very hands on - we will start sewing the first day! We will make pajama pants, a tote bag and a zippered bag. Patterns will be provided by the instructor. Dont have a sewing machine? Rental machines will be available for classroom use. A materials list will be provided one week before camp.
