Teen Wheel-Throwing - Ashtonn Means - The Art Center
Whether youve never touched clay before, thrown just one time, or have experience throwing, this is the class for all teens 14-18! Throughout this course students will learn the skills behind wheel-throwing, glaze application, and a basic understanding of Cone 10 materials and firing, as well as design principles for functional pottery, fundamentals of form, and aesthetic design techniques. Every class will have demonstrations, hands-on projects, and one-on-one guidance on the wheel-throwing process. Students are strongly encouraged to be self-directed and to bring project ideas and learning goals to work on throughout the eight-week course. Demonstrations will be geared toward students learning goals. See you there! Ashtonn Means is a Grand Junction native and has been doing ceramics since age thirteen. She continues to study at the Western Colorado Center for the Arts and is a member of the Grand Junction Clay Arts Guild. A senior at Colorado Mesa University, Ashtonn will graduate in May 2016 with a BFA in Studio Art and a minor in Psychology. Performance art is a catalyst in her pottery for the decorative design elements—slip trailing, stamping, glaze color, form—applied to the pieces. Sign up for 1 week or all 4 WHAT IS Amplify Sleep Away Rock Camp? Amplify Sleep Away Rock Camp is an intensive one-week overnight program offered to girls ages 11-17 years old and is held at Ojai Valley Boarding School in Ojai, CA. Here girls of all skill levels have the opportunity to learn guitar, bass, drums, vocals, keys or other instruments. Girls will also form a band, write an original song, and perform at the Final Showcase for friends, families, and fans! In addition to all this, girls will have the opportunity to meet other girls and female musicians and mentors, as well as participate in enrichment activities such as workshops on media literacy or screen-printing, high ropes course, Dj-skills, Zine making and more. Therapeutic Dog Reading - YSWPCS
The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed and dog-friendly atmosphere, which allows students to practice the skill of reading. Many of the children chosen for this program have difficulties reading and as a result have developed self-esteem issues. They are often self-conscious when reading aloud in front of other classmates. By sitting down next to a dog and reading to the dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant. In addition to time reading with Therapy Dogs students will also have the opportunity to read to stuffed animals, use the RAZ Kids computer reading program and engage in other supplemental activities as chosen by the teachers.
