Kids Winter Art Camp: Mixed-Media Masks! - Bellingham, WA
In this winter break art class, we'll imagine that we are in a warm tropical place with palm trees, wild birds singing, and sandy beaches. To inspire our imagination, we’ll learn about the French post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin, the location of Tahiti, and a brief history of Tikis. Tiki masks actually have a long, rich history in Polynesian culture. The Tiki masks were originally hand-carved wooden masks that were used to symbolize deities, give protection, and increase luck. We'll create our own colorful and textured papers with paints with a variety of brushes, and different items to make texture, in mixed-media format, then use the painted papers to create our Tiki masks. There are many things we have to survive in this world. Failures, conflicts, temptations, the list goes on. Though surviving the pressures and conflicts in our lives can be a tough and painful process, we can take comfort in the fact that like a piece of coal, we are being turned into precious diamonds for God's purpose. And in a culture that increasingly pushes Christians to the outskirts, it can be like being stranded on an island. But since the begining us Christians have been called to be set apart, "in the world but not of the world", and we know that through the power of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, that we can more than just meely survive, but we can strive! Join us this year in taking a stand on the principles and truths that the Word of God gives us, stepping up to live out our calling and purpose and learning how to transition from being Survivors to becomeing more than conquerors!! Join us for a fun-filled day experiencing an interactive storytelling adventure about the myth of King Midas! Each student will decorate a golden mask and participate in recreating the story. Students will also learn about Turkey and the cultural traditions of the land where King Midas once ruled. We will also explore the rich and colorful patterns of Turkish tiles, and each student will design and decorate their own tile to take home. A mid-morning snack will be served. Choice indoor and outdoor activities will be offered, as well as a walk to Taney Park, weather permitting. Please pack a lunch (including a beverage) in a disposable bag. For the safety of our students, please DO NOT INCLUDE PEANUT BUTTER or any nuts in your childs lunch.
