LATEST CAMPS NEWS: Woodworking Camp - Germantown Friends School
Young carpenters will enjoy a safe way to practice woodworking as they design and build a different project each week. Under the direction of lifelong woodworker and GFS teacher Edmund Livingstone, campers will work individually and collaboratively to plan, measure, cut, build and decorate their projects using wood, paper, nails, rubber bands, and imagination! Their finished products will be works of wonder and awe. Students will incorporate measuring, drilling holes, and strategically positioning their nails in each unique project. They then will customize their creations with arts and crafts. Safety and proper use of protective eyewear will be stressed at all times. This is a great beginning woodworking class for students to learn to use tools and, more importantly, to develop a lifelong love of working with their hands! Woodworking is a morning-only camp and participants may wish to stay for either Ceramics, Mandarin II -Golden Dragons Camp, or the Explorers Day Camp during the afternoon session. The winner will receive a prize from WoodmenLife. Bring your silent auction items, as we will be holding a benefit for the camp. Also we will participate in another food drive for our National Community Focus, FIGHT HUNGER! Items will be donated to a local shelter. Students will build their confidence while learning various Hip Hop dance styles in a positive, encouraging atmosphere. We have developed a unique curriculum to ensure they will learn musicality, choreography and performance skills each week, while using their own creativity and personal expression. Do you like to be active? Do you want to be more active? Are you looking for an alternative to an organized sport, but still want to be part of a team? Are you interested in keeping in shape for a fall sport? Most of all, do you want to have fun? Then this high-energy boot camp is for you! If, that is, you have the right attitude. -- This boot camp is designed specifically for developing young bodies and minds, with a fun (and safe) mixture of body weight exercises, running and cardio, partner and group exercises, games and obstacle courses. All movements will help build coordination, balance, and motivation. Stretching before and after exercise is emphasized, and mindfulness and yoga techniques will be integrated each day. (And did we mention the music?) -- All participants need is a good pair of tennis shoes, comfortable workout clothes, a water bottle, and a positive attitude! No other equipment necessary.
