Artists in Residence with Nelli Shevelkina & Connie Pfeiffer (Ages 7-14) - Young People
Express yourself! with Nelli Shevelkina Become an artist for a week in our art studios – dive into extreme sketching, painting, collage and sculpting. Work with different art media and learn how to create some art materials from scratch. Enhance drawing and painting skills by working on projects from observation. Discover and discuss masterworks. Experiment with many media choices and ideas from your imaginations. Projects include portraits, figures, sketching architecture and landscape outdoors, creating mini murals, collage, and 3-D multi media fabrications. Note: Includes a field trip to the Yale Art Gallery to view artwork and learn about several art media and techniques. Fun with Metal with Connie Pfeiffer Make jewelry and mini-sculpture with copper sheet metal and wire to wear or hang. Stamp, fold, hammer, bend, cut, twist and even heat metal to create pendants, medallions and forms from nature such as pea pods and leaves. Students will explore using basic hand tools, especially hammers, mallets, cutters, files, pliers and torches (one-on-one with instructor) to create works in metal. Lego EV3 Robotics - Universalist Unitarian Church - Arlington
Lego EV3 Robotics (Ages 8 through 12) This program introduces students to the exciting world of robotics. Students will use the Lego Mindstorms EV3 elements to program their robots to solve a series of challenges everyday. They will build using motors of different power and experiment with touch, ultrasonic, gyro, and color sensor to play fun games such as hockey and sumo wrestling. Lessons will cover topics in computer science, technology, engineering, math, and science. Campers will learn fundamentals of programming blocks such as loops, conditional operations, and the use of variables to store sensor values; and will learn how to program remote control, create parallel programming, and use computers, Bluetooth, and other technologies to connect with their robots. After mastering the basics of Lego EV3 building and programming, students will be immersed in a series of challenging Mars missions: launch the satellite, collect rocks, activate communications, save the robot, secure the power supply, and return to base safely. Students will be encouraged to build and test several designs and programs while collaborating and communicating with each other to successfully complete these tasks. 703-244-0585

Animal Caretakers Camp - Meadowside Nature Center
Animal lovers and aspiring veterinarians wont want to miss this camp! Learn the responsibility, care and needs of Meadowsides animal collection such as birds of prey, snakes, turtles, and more, with daily hands-on practice in care, handling and diet preparation. Field trips (like a visit to an animal rescue and veterinary clinic) and outdoor experiences give campers a close look at how animals adapt to changes in their environment, why wildlife sometimes conflicts with humans, and why animals may need our help for a second chance.
