Each day will bring new adventures and opportunities to experience marine mammals in our amazing Monterey Bay Sanctuary: learn field identification skills aboard a whale watching vessel; study the unique adaptations sea lions, seals and otters have to survive life in the sea; practice surfing like a dolphin! Participants will spend the week exploring their creativity and developing their original ideas using prototyping tools like Computer Aided Design (CAD), 3D scanning and printing and other tech tools in our Maker Space. Weeks 5-8 PM: 420 Racing Program (Session 2) - NESS
Come learn what it takes to be successful in fleet and team racing (the fun and challenging form of sailing as a team sport). Our experienced race coaches will challenge students to perfect their boat handling techniques, with the skipper and crew developing and refining coordination and mutual reliance. Students will work on improving and refining their boat-handling skills and developing together as a two-person team. Students will be challenged to perfect their upwind and downwind sailing techniques and will learn to better use hiking straps, tiller extensions, and sail controls and will develop their spinnaker and trapeze skills. Students will expand their knowledge of wind, weather, and tides, and will work on basic racing techniques and rules. Students will be encouraged to compete in the many local 420 regattas that we tow boats to by water. All students will be under the supervision of our race coaches in class and at local regattas. In addition to fleet racing, coaches will teach the techniques, tactics and rules of team racing through practice drills and a practice-race format.
