Thurs 2/18: OPENING NIGHT "Casa Valentina" benefits Campus Pride for L
QCTC supports Campus Pride ************************************** 50% of proceeds from OPENING NIGHT support Campus Pride for LGBTQ Youth BUY TICKETS: http://www.carolinatix.org/events/detail/casa-valentina From the creator of Kinky Boots and La Cage Aux Folles, Queen City Theatre Company presents: CASA VALENTINA by Harvey Fierstein. This hilarious, touching and groundbreaking new comedy opens in its Charlotte premiere on February 18th in partnership with Campus Pride. Back in 1962, most men went to the Catskill Mountains to escape the summer heat, but others took the two-hour drive to escape something else entirely: being men. Nestled in the land of dirty dancing and borscht belt comedy sat an inconspicuous bungalow colony that catered to a very special clientele: heterosexual men whose favorite pastime was dressing and acting as women. It was paradise for these men—white-collar professionals with families—to spend their weekends discreetly and safely inhabiting their chosen female alter egos. Infused with Fierstein’s trademark wit, this moving, insightful and delightfully entertaining new work offers a glimpse into the lives of a group of unforgettable characters as they search for acceptance and happiness in their very own Garden of Eden. Welcome to the world of self-made women. Welcome to Casa Valentina. 50% of proceeds from OPENING NIGHT support Campus Pride for LGBTQ Youth BUY TICKETS: http://www.carolinatix.org/events/detail/casa-valentina...

Girls in STEM Feb. Build-A-Thon - Keystone Science School Campus
February: Build-A-Thon At Keystone Science School, STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) is an integral part of every experience. The Girls in STEM program dives even deeper by exploring not only the STEM concepts in an empowering girls-only environment, but also highlighting real women currently working in STEM careers. This program builds leadership and collaboration between the girls involved as they engage in fun, hands-on activities that impart new skills and confidence in science, tech, engineering, and math - areas in which girls are inclined to be wallflowers. A key element of the program is a teaching technique called positive growth feedback in which "failure" is viewed as a necessary and even welcome step on the path to success. Research has shown that girls are especially receptive to this teaching technique and the scientific method is the ideal process for applying this technique to valuable learning. Girls in STEM will: Motivate and encourage participation and leadership in young females in STEM related fields. Incorporate the engineering and scientific process into interactive, engaging activities, while promoting positive growth feedback.
