Discovery Day Camp: Session 2 - Rockhaven Camp and Retreat Center (FPC)
Day camp sessions run Monday – Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with transportation provided to and from First Presbyterian Church. Check in at First Presbyterian Church begins at 8:30 am. Come to one or all four day camp programs which are filled with arts and crafts, games, skits, nature hikes, rock climbing, bible stories, music, worship and fellowship in a safe, fun, Christian environment. Whether youve never touched clay before, thrown just one time, or have experience throwing, this is the class for all teens 14-18! Throughout this course students will learn the skills behind wheel-throwing, glaze application, and a basic understanding of Cone 10 materials and firing, as well as design principles for functional pottery, fundamentals of form, and aesthetic design techniques. Every class will have demonstrations, hands-on projects, and one-on-one guidance on the wheel-throwing process. Students are strongly encouraged to be self-directed and to bring project ideas and learning goals to work on throughout the eight-week course. She continues to study at the Western Colorado Center for the Arts and is a member of the Grand Junction Clay Arts Guild. Performance art is a catalyst in her pottery for the decorative design elements—slip trailing, stamping, glaze color, form—applied to the pieces. Campers will build and program machines that react to the world and to people using embedded computers, sensors, and motors based on the Arduino family of processors. This is a fun, engaging camp that doesnt need any prior experience, but uses "real" gear in creative ways. The Arduino system is used in the University of Utah undergraduate Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science courses, so this is a great way to see what goes on in those majors.
