“Teen Sexism, Self-image and School Success” with Campbell Leaper, PhD
Adolescents today face the competing demands of doing well in school, being popular, developing close relationships with friends and romantic partners, and appearing sexually attractive to others. Each of these challenges is affected by stereotypes about what is considered desirable or undesirable for each gender. Sexism occurs when these stereotypes constrain the self-image and aspirations of girls and boys. What are the most powerful influences in teen sexism – family, peers, school, music, social media. How are these influences and the stereotypes they promote affecting teen relationships and school success? Do you worry about their effects on your children? Campbell Leaper, Professor and Department Chair of Psychology at UC Santa Cruz, and co-founder of the Gender Development Research Conference, is an expert on gender ideologies, self-concept, sexism, and gender bias in schools. He will talk about the ways that gender stereotypes affect girls’ and boys’ self-image, relationships, and school success. Most importantly, he will discuss what adults can do to mitigate sexism and the negative cultural influences in our kids’ lives. Teen Media Camp Video Premiere - Fairbanks, AK
Fairbanks area youth wrote the script, acted, provided production support for a suicide prevention video to be used on social media with funding from The Alaska Community Foundation Teen Suicide Prevention Grant and matching grant from FNSB Health and Social Services Commission. We want to express profound gratitude to Seed Media staff, crew and interns for their excellence and patience!
LUCKY WHITEHEADS 1st ANNUAL YOUTH FOOTBALL CAMP CHARITY EVENT - Manass
SUNDAY MAY 15th at Osbourn High School football fields in Manassas 9:00-12:00 kids ages 4-15 Football agility drills,blocking,tackling techniques,running,kicking,speed and agility and much more !! $25 per child on site registration first come first served. IN CASE OF STEADY RAIN CAMP WILL BE RESCHEDULED FOR A LATER DATE. RULES: * $25 per child CASH ONLY no checks or credit cards *Parents will not be allowed on the fields but may watch from outside the fence. This is to insure crowd control and make sure the children can focus on the coaches. *No Refunds *All waivers must be completed and turned in before your child is allowed to enter the practice field. PARKING available at METZ or near the OHS practice field back entrance. * No abusive language towards volunteers coaches or staff. If this becomes a problem you will be asked to leave immediately. Put your name in the hat to tell your 3-minute true, personal tale about summer camp. Or come to just listen to others. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You might faint. After all, life is stranger than fiction. Visual Arts Camp - Wolverine Camps
Wolverine Camps is a great setting for the inspired eye to capture beauty and create memorable pieces of art. Campers will demonstrate creative expression, learn advanced skills, techniques, and in-depth use of materials, vocabulary, and the principles of design. Students of all artistic levels can develop their creative techniques in this week long camp. Tuition includes all meals, lodging, instruction, art materials and camp t-shirt. Session 1 ~ Art Attack - Severna Park Racquetball & Fitness Club
Art Lovers come and see how creative you can be! See your imagination come alive and bring home beautiful keepsake art projects using different types of art mediums. We will also spend time playing some fitness games, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), and swimming in the pool, but our main focus will be the amazing art projects the kids will create. *****Please bring a nut free bag lunch***** Snack will be provided Please wear athletic shoes and bring a bathing suit towel and water bottle. Before care is available from 8-9 and aftercare is available from 2-6 for an additional fee.
