On Stage: Footlight Camp - Matilda - Takoma Park Community Center
In On Stage: Footlights, everyone shines! Our camp is designed to allow students the opportunity to dive into performance and design/construction aspects of theatre by working on an abridged production. This year, students will perform 2-3 musical numbers from the Broadway hit, Matilda , based on Roald Dahls beloved book. All songs will be performed as a group, and everyone will get a chance to be Matilda! Well start each day with physical, vocal, imagination & focus building warm-ups. Heres what well be doing: * creating & developing characters * learning music/songs * blocking/choreographing musical numbers * playing drama games * getting to know the theatre space and theatre terminology * set design and construction * working with props and costumes Our goal is to have every student on stage, every student engaged in the creative process, every student proud of their work. This session will allow kids to convert their favorite stories into keepsake crafts using the process of upcycling. This experience will teach the importance of repurposing through creativity while encouraging conversations about the value and importance of literature in our lives. Participants will create several items from old books chosen for this purpose. While creating these items, we will discuss their favorite stories, the most fascinating characters, and why books and upcycling are important. *Participants will need to bring 3 hardback books of their choice; books that are in disrepair or those which would otherwise be recycled are recommended. Favorite childrens books are especially useful. Ms. Suzanne Russell earned her M.S. in Library Science from Indiana University.
