The Torrance-South Bay Y and Unearthed Travel are hosting a life-changing journey to Costa Rica for teens ages 14-17 next summer, July 2017! [UCLA UniCamp is a non-profit organization that sends youth from all over Los Angeles up for a week of camp to get away from everyday life for a bit and create the environments they want for themselves, "singing songs, playing games, and changing lives."] I know what you're thinking. "You graduated. What are you still doing here?" This is a question I had asked myself at one point before deciding to apply for camp this time around. This time…I want to do it right. I want to do it for the campers. Don’t get me wrong, my first year of camp back in 2013 was a blast. But I joined because I had a good time with the other volunteers and it was nice idea to be “doing good.” But youth aren’t just customers you can provide service for and pat yourself on the back for a job well done. As with any other human beings, youth are meant to be lifted up and recognized for the gifts they’ve always possessed. We will work on tumbling, motions and jump technique, stunting basics, strength, cheer dances, showmanship and more! Camp will also include cheer crafts and team building exercises. Kids will learn the basics of one of the most popular coding languages in the world as they modify real Java code to build their own Minecraft mods including blocks, items, mobs, and more. Biology Explorers is an exciting week of applied science for middle school grade girls. From microorganisms to the biosphere, campers learn about many of the questions, techniques, and equipment scientists use to study the different levels of life. Each morning, campers see demonstrations and perform experiments in the biology labs at Saint Marys School. In the afternoon, campers travel to a variety of local scientific points of interest to watch professional scientists at work. Past field trips have included the Phytotron and Solar House at NCSU, the Sharon Harris Plant, and the Duke Lemur Center. Katie Floyd is an Instructor of Science at Saint Marys School. Ms. Floyd earned her B.A. from Hollins College and her M. S. from Emory University. She taught for ten years at Wesleyan College in Macon, GA where, in addition to teaching 14 different courses, she taught the science component of Spectacles, a residential summer camp for middle school girls. Ms. Floyd has been teaching at Saint Marys for sixteen years and has served as the director of Biology Explorers for over ten years. 9194244028.0
