Through play, crafts, and guided stories, children will learn some basic relaxation techniques and simple mindfulness skills, such as the superheros mindful listening (focusing on a particular sound or listening to see how many different sounds we hear), mindful seeing (like Superman—focusing on seeing things we had not noticed), and mindful breathing (paying attention to our own breathing). Superheroes are known for their ability to focus their superpowers and use them for compassion. Congressman Tim Ryan says, "Mindfulness will help children to pay attention and be kind to themselves and others as they swim in a world of distraction and aggression." In his book A Mindful Nation, Ryan highlights increased focus, decreased stress and a quieter mind as benefits of a regular mindfulness practice.
