2016 JJVA Summer Camps - Jacksonville, FL
VOLLEY STARS CAMP | Ages 5-8 years old. Volley Stars Camp focuses on motor skills, movement skills, ball skills and basic volleyball skills for the youngest players. Campers learn with a lighter ball and a camp t-shirt is included. All Volley Stars Camps are for 3 days only. Monday through Wednesday | 3 Day Camp Only | Hours: 9am - 12pm | Camp Price: $95 per session | Weeks 1 thru 10 POSITION CAMP | Ages 13-15 and 16-18 years old. This camp allows players to choose training in the skills of one or two specific positions. Players may choose to train in the skills for position of Setter, Outside Hitter, Middle Blocker or Libero/Defensive Specialist. Players may choose either time slot. Players should have at least one year of competitive team experience. “Teen Sexism, Self-image and School Success” with Campbell Leaper, PhD
Adolescents today face the competing demands of doing well in school, being popular, developing close relationships with friends and romantic partners, and appearing sexually attractive to others. Each of these challenges is affected by stereotypes about what is considered desirable or undesirable for each gender. Sexism occurs when these stereotypes constrain the self-image and aspirations of girls and boys. What are the most powerful influences in teen sexism – family, peers, school, music, social media. How are these influences and the stereotypes they promote affecting teen relationships and school success? Do you worry about their effects on your children? Campbell Leaper, Professor and Department Chair of Psychology at UC Santa Cruz, and co-founder of the Gender Development Research Conference, is an expert on gender ideologies, self-concept, sexism, and gender bias in schools. He will talk about the ways that gender stereotypes affect girls’ and boys’ self-image, relationships, and school success. Most importantly, he will discuss what adults can do to mitigate sexism and the negative cultural influences in our kids’ lives. Campers will explore topics such as logic, counting, graphing, geometry, and topology in a setting that promotes curiosity and creativity. Well play math-inspired games and puzzles and, of course, tackle challenging problems. Our goal is to instill a greater interest in mathematics and to lay a foundation for further exploration. 518-782-6654
Libero/DS Position Camp - Rice University Tudor Fieldhouse
This camp is designed for young libero and defensive players who want to learn more about their position. Campers will get lots of specific training and will learn techniques that will help them become more consistent. Skills covered include serve receive, individual defense, overhead digging, playing the second ball, serving, and learning how to properly dive and make emergency and recovery moves. Civil War Life - Old Trail School
Explore the Civil War with author, historian and former Gettysburg National Park Ranger, Jeff Evans. Throughout the course of the week we will experience Civil War drill, clothing, equipment and even food. Campers receive their own Civil War enlistment and discharge papers and even muster for pay. The Battles of Antietam and Gettysburg will be used to examine the world of Civil War battle. The role of local units will be closely examined. Ahoy ye pirates and mermaids! Join the Captain and his crew as we spend a week with the pirates and mermaids. Each day, campers will read about both pirates and mermaids and engage in themed crafts. Have fun painting seashells, decorating pirate masks and even walking the plank. On Friday, bring your bathing suit, towel and a change of clothes because we will be splashing around in the sprinkler with the mermaids!
