Week #3 - We welcome you to Week #3 of 3 weeks of fun, adventure, and learning. Our hope is that the Faith Camp experience will follow your child home and bless your family. Faith Camp is for children who have completed Kindergarten - 5th grade by June, 2016. Please Note: * Children who will have completed the 5th Grade by the time Faith Camp begins are known as Disciple Campers. These campers have a different experience than everyone else. Our DCs are exposed to Servant Leadership as they engage as helpers to our paid staff and participate in an off-site service opportunity and off-site field trip. There is an extra nominal fee for the field trip (movies, bowling, skating, etc.) * Because staff is hired and t-shirts and supplies are ordered according to our registration numbers, we are unable to give refunds within 30 days of your scheduled week of camp. Adolescents today face the competing demands of doing well in school, being popular, developing close relationships with friends and romantic partners, and appearing sexually attractive to others. Each of these challenges is affected by stereotypes about what is considered desirable or undesirable for each gender. Sexism occurs when these stereotypes constrain the self-image and aspirations of girls and boys. What are the most powerful influences in teen sexism – family, peers, school, music, social media. How are these influences and the stereotypes they promote affecting teen relationships and school success? Do you worry about their effects on your children? Campbell Leaper, Professor and Department Chair of Psychology at UC Santa Cruz, and co-founder of the Gender Development Research Conference, is an expert on gender ideologies, self-concept, sexism, and gender bias in schools. He will talk about the ways that gender stereotypes affect girls’ and boys’ self-image, relationships, and school success. Most importantly, he will discuss what adults can do to mitigate sexism and the negative cultural influences in our kids’ lives.
