Where Will My Child Sleep at Summer Camp?
Different camps have different types of accommodations. Some groups have kids sleeping in well-ventilated cabins whereas others have air-conditioned dorm rooms. Bathrooms could be in cabin or in a nearby wash house. There are also programs that have youth sleeping in tents outside. An organization’s mission often dictates the sleeping arrangements. For example, a 4-H or Girl Scout group may want campers to be outdoors to learn important survival skills whereas an academic camp may want youth inside so they can focus on their work.

Held in Ashland, Nebraska at Carol Joy Holling Camp and Retreat Center, this event will gather youth from across the ELCA for intentional leadership development and faith formation. Our guests include Presiding Bishop Eaton, Kevin Strickland, Assistant to the Presiding Bishop/Executive for Worship, Stephen Bouman, Executive Director for Congregational and Synodical Missions of the ELCA, and several other wonderful speakers and teachers. Our featured presenter is Lyle Griner who will be coaching us on Peer Ministry. Each synod will select two youth to participate and send one adult to accompany them on the journey. Registration will be covered by a special grant. Your only responsibilities will be travel and being open to what God has in store for you through this event. Registration closes on October 1, 2015.

In this camp from Youth Digital, kids learn professional Java programming as they design and build their customized Minecraft server that they can share with friends. At the end of camp, kids walk away with a playable, shareable Minecraft server that they built from scratch. Theyll also be able to access the online version of the course after camp, including video tutorials, interactive quizzes, and new challenges. Kids will learn the basics of one of the most popular coding languages in the world as they modify real Java code to build their Minecraft server. During camp, kids will master introductory computer programming concepts including methods and parameters, if-then statements, and more. Theyll also learn to use a pro-level Java development tool to build their server. Reading Rockets is a program designed to be an early intervention for students going into first, second, or third grades. The goal of this program is to provide additional support for students who could benefit from reinforcement in reading skills over the summer.
