STEMvironment (7/11/16 to 7/15/16) - Aurora
Get your green on as you explore how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is a part of everything around us. This program will give participants an integrated exposure to the various STEM fields and how they can be applied within an environmental context. Explorations will include the chemistry of recycling, creating power from worms, and energy transfer. The week will culminate in an environmental engineering project where students will use these real-world STEM concepts to create their own energy-efficient home. (630)9075950

Artists in Residence II with Nelli Shevelkina & Connie Pfeiffer (Ages 7-14) - Young People
Folk Art Around The World with Nellie Shevelkina Go Global! Learn about different cultures through their arts. We will travel from Africa to the Americas, Europe to Asia, Australia and in between discovering traditional folk arts from around the world. Explore the history, techniques, and special meanings of various crafts while noticing similarities and differences in their designs, patterns, and styles. We will create mosaics, painted and printed fabrics, sand paintings, mask making, paper maché figurines, paper cutouts, clay whistles, just to name a few. Students are encouraged to research their own cultural and ethnic backgrounds and proudly share these artistic traditions with the class. Fun with Metal with Connie Pfeiffer Make jewelry and mini-sculpture with copper sheet metal and wire to wear or hang. Stamp, fold, hammer, bend, cut, twist and even heat metal to create pendants, medallions and forms from nature such as pea pods and leaves. Students will explore using basic hand tools, especially hammers, mallets, cutters, files, pliers and torches (one-on-one with instructor) to create works in metal. Dont try this at home: the sequel! If you missed it last year, dont make the same mistake twice! This fun, mess-filled camp is making a comeback with more ooey-gooey, messy fun! Join in as we suds things up with wet-felting, get down and dirty in clay or turn up the psychedelic vibes with some tie-dye! Campers should bring lunch, drinks and two snacks (due to allergies, please make sure all food is peanut free) PFACs camps are led by one teaching artist per 12-15 students with assistance from Camp Counselors. Using wrenches, specialized tools, grease, and your own hands, youll overhaul your brakes, hubs, headsets and thats just the start. From here on out youll be an expert at bike repair and maintenance.
