This course is taught by veteran Head-Royce Math Teacher Chris Davies A U.C. Certified equivalent of academic year Algebra II taught in an intensive six-week format. Top-performing Head-Royce students may use the course to accelerate into Pre-calculus pending departmental approval. Other purposes for taking this course include reviewing and previewing Algebra II as needed. (As with all summer for-credit courses, students may choose to audit this course or proceed on a for-credit basis.) Weeks 5-8 PM: 420 Racing Program (Session 2) - NESS
Come learn what it takes to be successful in fleet and team racing (the fun and challenging form of sailing as a team sport). Our experienced race coaches will challenge students to perfect their boat handling techniques, with the skipper and crew developing and refining coordination and mutual reliance. Students will work on improving and refining their boat-handling skills and developing together as a two-person team. Students will be challenged to perfect their upwind and downwind sailing techniques and will learn to better use hiking straps, tiller extensions, and sail controls and will develop their spinnaker and trapeze skills. Students will expand their knowledge of wind, weather, and tides, and will work on basic racing techniques and rules. Students will be encouraged to compete in the many local 420 regattas that we tow boats to by water. All students will be under the supervision of our race coaches in class and at local regattas. In addition to fleet racing, coaches will teach the techniques, tactics and rules of team racing through practice drills and a practice-race format.
