“Teen Sexism, Self-image and School Success” with Campbell Leaper, PhD
Adolescents today face the competing demands of doing well in school, being popular, developing close relationships with friends and romantic partners, and appearing sexually attractive to others. Each of these challenges is affected by stereotypes about what is considered desirable or undesirable for each gender. Sexism occurs when these stereotypes constrain the self-image and aspirations of girls and boys. What are the most powerful influences in teen sexism – family, peers, school, music, social media. How are these influences and the stereotypes they promote affecting teen relationships and school success? Do you worry about their effects on your children? Campbell Leaper, Professor and Department Chair of Psychology at UC Santa Cruz, and co-founder of the Gender Development Research Conference, is an expert on gender ideologies, self-concept, sexism, and gender bias in schools. He will talk about the ways that gender stereotypes affect girls’ and boys’ self-image, relationships, and school success. Most importantly, he will discuss what adults can do to mitigate sexism and the negative cultural influences in our kids’ lives. Summer Camp Open House! - Wyandotte, MI
Summer Camp Open House in our Community Gallery on the lower level FREE for everyone to attend! Join us at this fun open house so you can catch a glimpse of the camps we offer for children during the summer. Sample art stations are set up so you and your children can take home art projects! DCA camp instructors will be available to answer any questions students or parents may have. You can also register for your camps on this night. We'll also have raffles to give away free camp registrations!

Send A Kid 2 Camp - Clinton Township, MI
On April 19th @ 6PM we will be hosting a "fun"draiser at the Stray Cat Lounge in Clinton Township. $10 cover charge gets you a buffet style pasta dinner. There will be a 50/50 raffle and a Silent Auction. All monies raised will go to Kids Burn Camp at YMCA Camp Manitoulin. It takes $500 to send one kid to camp but the return on investment is priceless.

Are you a math whiz who just cant get enough? Then this camp is for you! Well determine your understanding of math and challenge you to keep growing during the summer break. This camp is appropriate for students who are average or above in math but desire to stay engaged over the summer and have fun too! Two separate classes are offered: 1st - 3rd Grade & 4th-6th Grade *Please note: Students who are registered for a morning and afternoon camp within the same week are invited to stay for FREE supervised lunch and recess between 11:30 am-12:30 pm.
